Officially accepted by the residents of the Town of South Thomaston, Maine as organized on 3 March 1953. Originally started by Fred C. Batty when he purchased a 1922 International soda acid fire truck in 1948. This truck was housed at his place of business and residence on Waterman's Beach Road. Sometime after the town acquired it's own trucks, they were kept in Cliff Dennison's garage at night. During the day, they were kept outdoors. Later the trucks were kept in the garage area under the Gilford B. Butler School. They were housed there until the current fire station was built in 1974. On 26 March 2003 the residents of South Thomaston enacted an ordinance called the Fire Department Ordinance which the Department has been operating under since thereafter.
Our logo to the right was designed in 1987 by Janet Page, the wife of a
former member. This logo was originally used on T-shirts. Later, it
was put on the door panels on new apparatus and the 16 foot Carolina Skiff
purchased since it was accepted by the members.
Regular monthly drills of the department are held the first Monday and third Monday of the month.
The fire department has three engines on the main line and a 16 foot Carolina skiff in it's arsenal.

Burning permits can be obtained from the town forest warden or his deputies. Permits are issued for after 5:00 PM weekdays and for all day on weekends and holidays. No permits will be issued if the fire danger is high.
The Fire Department is located at 125 Spruce Head Road (Route 73) about a half mile from the 'Keag Store in the same building as the town office.
